October 2025 - HERGhana Visits Dagbamete

In October 2025, HERGhana board Chair Dr. Imogen, board member Emma Uzoma, and donor Herb Richter accompanied founder and president Mama Adzorhlor to one of HER Ghana’s engaged communities in Dagbamete, Ghana.

Highlights of the visit include:

AI4SD Robotics Challenge

Dr. Coe accompanied the local school team to the inaugural Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development (AI4SD) Robotics Challenge at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana.

The Dagbamete Basic School ICT Lab and robotics teams are supported by HER Ghana. The two co-ed teams are comprised of four girls and four boys, working together on programming challenges. After about 8 months of learning and practice, the teams were invited to participate in the nation-wide AI4SD Challenge.

The competition was organized by the Responsible AI Lab (RAIL) under the AI4SD initiative to integrate AI and robotics into Ghana’s educational curriculum and provide students with hands-on STEM experience. It attracted 14 schools from across the country and was supported by the French Embassy and other partners. The event showcased robotics and AI innovation among Junior High and Senior High school students from across Ghana.

Dr. Coe travelled to Kumasi in her capacity as Board Chair to support and cheer on the students throughout the event, reinforcing HERGhana’s ongoing commitment to STEM education and opportunities for youth in our partner communities.

Excitingly, the Dagbamete teams took home first and second place in the competitive rounds. Additionally, one of the girls on the team, Emmanuella, won a pop-quiz mathematics prize, highlighting both problem-solving ability and knowledge retention among the team members. Dagbamete Headmaster Barnabas was also recognized with the Outstanding Mentor Award, acknowledging his leadership and mentorship of the students throughout their preparation and competition performance.

Board Chair Dr. Coe joined the Board of HERGhana’s sister organization, Health Education Rights Ghana (HERG), to meet with representatives from Ghana’s Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection in Accra.

HERG’s board Chair, James Wemegah and Vice Chair, Madam Edith Mawusi Nyakpo, delivered a presentation on HERGhana’s recent achievements and activities. She highlighted the success of the ongoing menstrual health workshops and the Bfree cup initiative, which has benefited over 600 girls in schools across Ghana.

We would like to thank the Ministry for welcoming our groups and for their commitment to health, education, and gender equity in Ghana. We look forward to further fostering a collaborative and productive relationship between HERGhana, HERG and the Ministry.

The HERGhana team joined Mama Adzorhlor in her capacity as Queen Mother and Chief Torgbui Klu Agudzeamegah to meet with Mr. Karim Ayaana Umar, Director of Education for Akatsi South Region.

Mama and Torgbui thanked Director Umar for his continued dedication to the students of Akatsi South, and the investments his directorate has made to support their education. Director Umar also recognized the work of HERGhana in the region and expressed his support for our programming.

We are grateful to have a close relationship with the directorate and look forward to continued collaboration in pursuit of a better future for education across the region.

The HERGhana team attended the Speech and Prize Giving Day at Dagbamete Basic School, where students were recognized before the village for their accomplishments and contributions during the 2024-2025 academic year. This year’s celebration was marked with some incredible student performances, with talking drum, cultural Ewe dance, and Afrobeats dance groups. It was wonderful to see the students celebrate their peers and classmates so joyously.

Our Chair, Dr. Coe, presented donations from Canada of refurbished laptops, robotics kits, and other supplies to the school. She was also invited to present awards to the students on the robotics teams in recognition of their recent accomplishments at the AI4SD Robotics Challenge in Kumasi.

We are so grateful for the dedicated teachers and mentors of Dagbamete Basic School for their commitment to their students, and to the community of Dagbamete for showing up in a display of support for their kids’ futures.
